Making the Ketogenic Lifestyle your own: by Annie Tomsik
There is so many different plans for Keto. It has gone from a small known to a huge million dollar industry virtually overnight. Like anything in our present world, if it makes money someone is making it.
There are those of us who are not in it for the money. We give free resources, and guidance wherever we can. We are dedicated to the success of others. You could say that your success is my success. Like you, I wanted to see myself differently in the mirror. I wanted to be what I was in my youth. I wanted to feel better when buying clothing. I wanted to stop envying thinner women. I wanted to have a fighting chance at surviving life.
We all have a reason for starting a ketogenic lifestyle. Mine was my diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and not wanting to share the fate of my brother. Yours might be weight loss or optimizing your health. But getting start has been a long road. You may have started with keto snacks, or why an app that tells you that you have to maintain 2000 calories per day. You may have tried marketing products, and now you are confused or in a plateau.
Throughout these past three years, there is one thing I have learned over all each of our bodies are not the same. Not only are our bodies different in our tolerance, but the doctors we admire have different advice. Dr. Eric Westman who is an obesity specialist and he holds to total carb uses. Which I have found for me this is better. Other doctors will use net carbs which works for my husband.
Some people do better when they can do several days of intermittent fasting as recommended by Nephrologist and Obesity specialist Dr. Jason Fung and Nutrition Specialist Dr. Eric Berg. I am not someone who can fast for more than one day or I feel very sick. Others do better using Ketovore (keto-carnivore) as General Practitioner Dr. Ken Berry and Nutritional Psychiatrist Georgia Ede.
My daughter is a vegetarian. She also eats keto. She eats foods with natural fats and protein like eggs, avocados and butter. After seeing how keto works for each person, I honestly believe that as long as you follow the basic principles, anyone can live a ketogenic lifestyle. You have to be strict as far as not eating sugar, grains, seed oils, fruit, and starchy vegetables. But you can still make many of the same recipes you once made by removing ingredient and substituting others.
Many ketotarians enjoy bread made with almond flour instead of wheat. I love making cheesy rice or fried rice with cauliflower. I substitute zucchini for noodles. I use make favorite sandwiches into wraps and bowls. The best part of eating this way is the fresh ingredient you can use. Farmers markets are a ketotarian's best friend.
Don't worry about APP's, Calories, Macros, and Marketing tactics. Your progress and stalls can be contributed to many different factors. Myself, I had many plateaus because of menopause. But once I started going under 20 total carbs per day, I was able to get back on my path. You may need to make a few adjustments but as your body heals from the inside out, you will see it is well worth it.
