Uber and Lyft Drives Snacks and Drinks by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik

So a lot of things come up with LYFT and UBER. One of them is a question about offering the CUSTOMERS (PAX) as many drivers call them short for PASSENGERS SNACKS and DRINKS.

So in this blog I explore the benefits and downfalls on both offering free stuff, selling, and what liabilities it could involve.

TO OFFER SNACKS AND DRINKS TO THE PAX IS THE QUESTION?

I entertained several conversations and even ran a poll on the group I belong to.

The results indicated a majority of the drives voted NO on the SNACKS and DRINKS for the PAX.

The second question I asked would the SNACKS and DRINKS be offered to the PAX for FREE or would a CHARGE for the items be in store for the PAX.

A majority of the drives stated the SNACKS and DRINKS would be offered for free.

OFFERING SNACKS AND DRINKS TO PAX IS IT A GOOD OR BAD IDEA?

FOR FREE OR FOR SALE?
Many of the drives who commented and made remarks about offering the SNACKS and DRINKS for FREE stated that the tips created from them was much better than not having them to offer to the PAX.
Here is another benefit: because it is part of your business you could write off this expense on taxes. If you are buying and offering these items for the PAX at NO FEE than you can write them off as a loss on your taxes.
If you are selling them you could be responsible for SALES TAX, and have to submit your PROFITS as well as your  EARNINGS from the PAX driving.

Here is an issue I did not see in any of the conversations because this is considered another type of business:
Would you need a license or permit to SALE or GIVE away SNACKS and DRINKS?
Believe it or not you could be required to get a permit even if you give the DRINKS and SNACKS for FREE. If you are selling it it can fall under your current business license but you should check with your local health department and research business laws and regulations on giving the SNACKS and DRINKS for free or selling them to the PAX.

UBER and LYFT ADD SALE ITEMS IN CERTAIN CITIES:
Actually both companies are stating that drivers can offer PAX drinks and snacks and even phone chargers from point A to point B.
The Coke a Cola Company has partnered with both companies and in certain cities are offering a display box full of products for the PAX.
PAX can purchase items through the APP.
A company called CARGO will be involved in the sales and distribution of the items.
Drivers will earn $1 per sale and a 25 percent commission per sale.
There is also talk of a $10 bonus for every time the driver sales 10 items.
The company called CARGO stated the drivers can earn up to $500 per month additional income from the sales but must meet certain requirements and standards.
The company is expanding to the West Coast so you may see this soon!

UBER AND LYFT POLICIES ON FOOD AND DRINKS FOR PAX:
Both companies have no real policy on this they both say it is up to the driver or contractor.

IS THERE A POSSIBLE LIABILITY WHEN GIVING PAX FOOD AND DRINKS:
We are not talking about Alcoholic Beverages  here only regular drinks and snacks. There could still be some possible liability issues for the drivers. Today especially I would worry about all the possible things that could go wrong. The fact is your at this point the one offering the items so there for you are responsible for any thing that could possibly happen to the PAX.
Even if UBER and LYFT continue down the road of the company offering SNACKS and DRINKS the Contractor or driver could still hold some types of responsibilities to the PAX if something dramatic happens.

SOme issues like liability issues, and other issues may have to be worked out in the end run, but it seems as the companies are both moving toward the direction of having SNACKS and DRINKS available through the Contractors (DRIVERS) for  SALE for the PAX.

I guess only time will tell if it is a GOOD OR BAD IDEA!
