Living in Reno Nevada by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik

I call Reno my home as my family lives here. So here is my take on the question.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE IN RENO NEVADA?

Like many places Reno is changing with the times, offering many jobs, low unemployment, and attracting many people from California and other areas. This has caused a major housing boom, and lots of construction on new apartments and homes.

New homes are being built even on the outskirts of Reno and Sparks, and many smaller communities like Verdi, Sun Valley, Lemon Valley, Cold Springs, and Red Rock.

However it is not the casinos or gambling industry fueling the changes, companies like Tesla, Google, Panasonic, Apple and other industries coming to the area have fueled the change.

Reno is experiencing a population growth, industry growth, construction growth, as many of the old casinos have been converted to apartments or condos, a mall was tore down and apartments built. Only a hand full of large scale casinos are even left in Reno and Sparks area.

There are still quite a few smaller casinos, however I do not believe casinos are the main draw of Reno any more. Events like Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations, Rib and Chill Cook offs, Air Shows, Ba-loon Races, conventions, and other events attracts tourism.

Lake Tahoe, Virginia City along with Carson City also add to the tourism

SOME RECENT STUDIES SHOW THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION ABOUT RENO:

RENO currently is highest cost of living in the State of Nevada ranking highest on Housing and Utilities, and a bit lower on Transportation. Also highest on Food, and Health Care.

The COST OF LIVING IN RENO is 7 PERCENT higher than the NATIONAL AVERAGE.

CURRENT MEDIAN HOUSE PRICE:  $370, 596

CURRENT MEDIAN HOUSE RENT  $1,161

POPULATION:
Reno is estimated at a population 248,000 making Reno the 4th most populated city in Nevada.
It is estimated the population of Washoe County that includes Sparks, Nevada is near 500,000.

WAGES:
Currently the estimated yearly income in the USA is $28,555 per year, but the average income in Reno $46,389 per year.

Many positions still are tip based in Reno, Sparks Nevada area with the casino industry.

NEVADA MINIMUM WAGE IS ONLY $ 8.25 an hour with changes coming in January 2020 to $10.00 per hour, and increasing all the way to $13.00 by Jan 2024.

INDUSTRY:
Tourism is the primary industry for Reno and Sparks , including Lake Tahoe and Carson City.
Mining actually comes in second as Nevada is considered the 4th highest production in the world of GOLD.
In the past few years Reno has attracted some big companies like TESLA, PANASONIC, GOOGLE, APPLE in a place in Sparks Nevada called USA Parkway.
Casinos and Gambling revenues have slit down as the main industry of the area.

In closing the weather in Reno has 4 seasons, and yes it does snow here. The last few years the snow levels and winters have been fairly mild, but it can get quite messy in the area. Most of the events in Reno are held from from April to October due to warmer weather conditions in those months.

Reno has attracted new companies and it on a top spot for many new companies. Like any place there are homeless issues, poverty, and other issues, However if you ask me Reno is a place I love calling home.
