Reno Down and Out update March 2018 by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik
Recently in Seattle a court ruled a man living in his truck was considered his home. Reports from other States like Oregon, Washington, and California are suggesting that more people are going homeless. What is considered homeless is debatable anymore as more people are living in vehicles including Recreational vehicles.
Even in the States with wage increases the cost of living moves along as well. In the closest States next to Nevada homeless issues are increasing and not decreasing. This is very concerning to our local area as increases of employment, wages and cost of living could create similar issues in the homeless.
According to the Reno Alliance for the Homeless this year an estimated 3000 people are considered homeless in Washoe County. Nearly 100 people live in what is known as Tent City in downtown area of Reno.
Some areas of town you see tents and panhandling more than other areas. Also some casinos are experiencing issues with homeless and poverty in the downtown areas. Reno while experiencing a growth in population and employment also is experiencing a cost of living increase as well.
According to most web pages is cost between $1000 to $1700 month for rent or a mortgage in Reno currently. The current salary range in Reno is only $26, 352 with a median range of $46,489. SO breaking that down with no taxes or extra taken out is $2196 to $3874 per month income.
It is estimated a family of 4 people cost $2650 per month not including the rent or mortgage. Reno is ranked 307 out of 551 cities in the world in Cost of Living Expenses. Reno currently is only 36.39% lower than NEW YORK CITY in cost of living.
As far as the homeless Reno is just starting to feel the effects and really has not come up with any answers.
