COBRA KAI Review by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik
Those of us who in our younger years followed Karate Kid would love this series.
It is featured on You Tube Red and I watched the first 10 episodes.
WARNING THIS HAS A LOT OF SPOILERS SO IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW DO NOT READ THIS BLOG!
So this series takes off the spin of Daniel Larruso and Johnny Lawrence have grown up and have very different lives.
Johnny is shown divorced and has an estranged relationship with his wife and son. His life is on a down ward spiral as he gets fired from his job and than his car gets wrecked by some friends of Daniels daughter Samantha.
Johnny decides with some convincing from a young student named Miguel to re open Cobra Kai.
However the feud between Daniel and Johnny starts again for all the wrong reasons. Johnny sees Daniel with his life. Daniel has a wife and 2 kids plus Daniel has become wealthy and owns a car dealership. This leads to Johnny being jealous and starts the issues between the 2 of them.
Daniel has all but stopped his martial arts at this point except on his commercials. He is living his life but finds himself off balance and seeking some answers in his own life. Daniel has some demons of the past as well and attempts to stop Johnny from operating Cobra Kai.
However it seems things go against Daniel and the Cobra Kai stay in the community.
Through the episodes Johnny trains Miguel and ends up training a few students in the high school. However his training methods are different but the message from the old days Strike Hard, Strike Fast, and No Mercy are instilled into the students.
Daniel has his own set of problems with a teenage daughter, business and family. Daniel opens up to his old teacher who has passed away who was Mr. Miyagi in hopes that he can get back to his life. In a memory he is reminded life needs balance and so he decides to start practicing his martial arts again.
Daniel gets back to his martial arts practicing and lands a student named Robby.
Daniel however is unaware Robby is Johnny Lawrences son.
Through the episodes Johnny and Daniel actually seem to get along with one another at times.
However you really start to notice Johnny is doing the Cobra Kai for the wrong reasons and Robby and Miguel have a few run ins and are fighting for the attention of Samantha.
Samantha also is skilled at the martial arts as well as she shows off some moves in several episodes.
It all leads to the All Valley Karate tournament where Cobra Kai gets re-instated to participate in.
By the 10th episode Robby and Miguel square off. However Johnny starts to realize that maybe the way he has taught the students may be wrong. His student Miguel wins the tournament but his relationship with his son Robby is still estranged. You can feel his second thoughts at the end of the series.
After the match Daniel takes Robby to Miyagi's old home and tells him this is the new dosho for his martial arts. He also says they need students.
On the other side Johnny is meet by his old teacher John Kreese at the end of the series.
DEFINITELY WATCH IT WAS GREAT SPIN ON THE KARATE KID!
