Will the Casino industry live in Reno Nevada by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik

I live in a small community outside of Reno Nevada called Verdi. Many people believe it is really far away but the truth is it is on the border of Nevada and California only 15 miles outside of downtown Reno. I only mention this because two casinos below are near my house.

The whole gambling industry is changing with many other states offering Indian Casinos Reno has lost several casinos and the who idea of Reno being a gambling town has changed in the past few years. Reno suffered like many places with lose of jobs, high employment rates, and a housing crash but if you plan to come to Reno or surrounding areas today do not expect that.

Currently the housing market is booming with lots of new developments being built, and new companies moving to Sparks/Reno area like Tesla, Panasonic, and Google. So casinos have become a smaller part of Reno/Sparks area. There is less than 25 casinos in Sparks and Reno area today.

There are a few larger casinos left like: Atlantis, Peppermill, Cal Neva, Harrah's, Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Circus Circus, Grand Sierra Resort, Nugget, Sands, and  Boomtown. These casinos have hotels, restaurants and everything you would expect from large casinos.

As far as smaller casinos include the following: Gold Ranch, Gold Dust West, Rail City, Hobeys, Western Village, Baldinis, Tamarack, Bonanza, Bodertown, Siris, Nugget Downtown, and a few others.

However the casinos no longer control the city much like Las Vegas. Today casinos rely on events like Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations, Rib Cook-offs and other events to attract guest or conventions. People are visiting Reno more for these events , and Tahoe and other areas than the casinos.
In Reno and Sparks and even in other areas the weather impacts the casinos as well it is much slower in Reno area in the winter. This last year the I-80 was closed several times stopping traffic both ways. Many people still come from California so closing of I-80 impacts the whole area.

As Reno and surrounding areas turn to more alternative companies casinos are losing employees to higher paying positions and to companies that offer more benefits and incentives. This is leaving many potions open in the casino industry and also may force casinos to consider raising wages and offering better incentives to keep employees. The larger casinos may survive this but smaller casinos may not. In the future of Reno and surrounding areas I foresee some more closing casinos.
If the smaller casinos do survive they will have to play to the local community rather than visitors.

It is time to face the fact casinos are no longer the primary employers, and no longer the primary attraction in Reno and surrounding areas. I do not see more casinos coming to Reno though Stations Casinos has talked about building one here for years. I see the larger casinos surviving and smaller casinos fading away unless they are part of a larger company.

The whole industry in Reno and surrounding areas is changing and though I believe some of the casinos will stay there is already evidence companies are not going with casinos. There are two hotels that recently opened at closed casino properties and they re-opened the properties with no casino involved.

Some of the casinos that closed or sold have been converted to apartments or condos. This just shows the direction the casino industry is going. Face it you really do not have to come to RENO or surrounding areas for a casino any more.
