DOWN and OUT in RENO NEVADA
Down and Out in Reno Nevada is a series developed by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik to talk about the real issues of the homeless in and around the Reno and Sparks Nevada area. I started this series in research of the homeless issues in Reno Nevada about 6 months ago.
I have done 5 series videos and a few blog since but have decided to start really investigating the issues here in Reno and Sparks Nevada.
FACTS ABOUT RENO IN 2018:
THE COST OF LIVING IS 7 PERCENT HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE!
The median home value in Reno is $352,100. Reno home values have gone up 7.5% over the past year and Zillow predicts they will rise 5.8% within the next year. The median list price per square foot in Reno is $230, which is higher than the Reno Metro average of $226.
The Nevada Minimum Wage is the lowest hourly wage that an employee working in Nevada can legally be paid. Both Nevada and the federal government have set a legal minimum wage - Nevada's is $8.25 per hour, while the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
Among Sparks, NV homeowners, the median income is $68,591. This indicates that a monthly maximum of $1,600 should be spent by homeowners on all housing related costs.
It may not be as famous as its cousin to the south in Las Vegas, but Reno Nevada is no slouch when it comes gambling and casinos. In fact, there are 20 LARGE casinos in Reno, NV. They combine to produce over $570 million dollars in gaming revenue each year. In many ways, Reno resembles the Las Vegas of old.

According to the 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress, of the states with the largest percentage of homeless and unsheltered residents, Nevada ranked second behind California, with a rate of 58.4 percent.
Residents who live in unstable and non-permanent housing situations, such as weekly motels, are counted among the city’s homeless population.
Paul Parent, who is the Men’s Services Coordinator at the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission, a local homeless shelter, attributes the recent spike in Reno’s levels of homelessness to rising costs of weekly hotels/motels, in addition to that of traditional housing.
