NEVADA SPORTS BOOKS FUTURE OUTLOOK
Last month marked an amazing new issue for Nevada it lost to New Jersey in Sports Wagering Revenues. So is Nevada in trouble and is there reason to worry as more States consider making Sports Wagering Legal?
So I live in Reno so I am going to use the books here as my example and what I believe will happen down the road to the books here in Reno. I will also discuss a few Las Vegas Sports Books.
Laws have changed and currently the following States have Legalized Sports Wagering:
Delaware. New Jersey, Mississippi, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Mexico
The Next Round of States that are working on changing the laws:
New York, Washington DC, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Arkansas, Montana, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Maine
States working toward legalization:
Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, California, Oregon, Ohio,Virginia, North Dakota, Arizona, Hawaii, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Georgia, Vermont, North Carolina, Colorado, and Alabama
States that are not interested at this point in time:
Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Wyoming
UTAH is holding out as well to be the only STATE with no form of gambling at all!
Casinos in Nevada have been fighting other casinos all over the country opening the past few years. One big difference is Vegas changes and offers tourist Sin City, where as Reno has moved away from the casino industry a little and offered opportunities to more industrial companies.
So where does this leave Nevada a State that for years dominate Sports Wagering?
In Reno there are only 5 Sports Books:
William Hill Sports Book, Harrah's Sports Book, Peppermill Sports Book, Atlantis Sports Book, and recently opened Baldini's Sports Book.
Out of these 5 here is my overall rating and predictions for each book:
1) WILLIAM HILL SPORTS and RACE BOOK:
This company hits the number 1 spot on my list only because it is the largest Sports Book in Nevada, and also has already expanded into some of the other States that are legal at the moment. This company is positioned to have the largest impact as the company is the largest wagering company in Europe already. This company also owns a company called CBS that operates many of the computers that the books use. I would expect William Hill to grow in America as well. One advantage is that William Hill only rents or leases spaces in Casinos or Outlets where sports books are allowed. William Hill also offers a mobile account to customers and that is the wave of the future.
2) HARRAH'S SPORTS and RACE BOOK:
Recently an article came out about Ceazers Entertainment and Eldorado Casino whom are in the process of merging together.
This also puts these companies at number 2 on my radar.
Harrah's is also in a position to offer sports books in many of the States that are becoming legal, and has casinos in some of those States already.
Eldorado owns several casinos and horse race tracks in many of these States as well.
If these companies merge it could be possible Eldorado will remove William Hill Sports Book from Casinos that the company is currently leased into.
Ceazers Entertainment also offers mobile accounts to customers as well.
If they decide to put sports books in all the properties this company will be a force in the industry.
3) ATLANTIS CASINO SPORTS BOOK and RACE BOOK:
Atlantis operates as an independent book.
Atlantis Sports book hits number 3 on my list for the following reasons.
Currently the book has a satellite book in Minden, Nevada at an Indian Casino called Wa She Shu Casino.
Also Atlantis owns Black Hawk Casino in Colorado.
The book and casino has hopes that Colorado State will pass the laws to operate the Sports book by February 2020.
Atlantis also offers customers mobile accounts, and the only casino that has mobile account for horse racing that I am aware of.
However this Sports Book sits right in the middle and we will have to see how much the casino and owners want to risk in the sports wagering industry down the road.
They could satellite more books and grow as well.
4) PEPPERMILL SPORTS and RACE BOOK:
Peppermill operates as an independent book in Reno and has 2 locations.
The other location is at the Western Village Casino in Sparks, Nevada.
This is why it hits the number 4 spot.
While the book does offer mobile wagering there is no indication that Peppermill is wanting to expand the sports or race book outside of Reno Nevada.
5) BALDINI'S SPORTS BOOK:
Recently opened as an independent book they do not offer horse racing at this point and time.
There has been talk of a mobile app coming out before August 2019 but none offered at this time.
This is why I placed this book at number 5.
There is no indication this book will expand outside of Reno ,Nevada.
LAS VEGAS NEVADA BOOKS ON MY TOP 2 LIST:
MGM could land in the hunt as well they have many casinos in the States that are legal and some in the States that are expected to become legal. MGM offers sports apps to customers as well.
STATIONS Horse and Race Books are currently only in the casino owned by Stations in Las Vegas.
It could be possible for Stations to expand but not likely at this point in time.
PREDICTIONS FOR NEVADA BOOKS:
As books expand more technology will be offered and Mobile apps are going to lead the way.
I could see books getting smaller in the casinos as customers go mobile.
After all you can watch sports almost anywhere these days.
Sports Books could also do what many fast food chains have done and offer kiosk to wager on.
This would go with my theory books will be smaller and operated with less staff in the future.
As Horse Racing is becoming a smaller and smaller sport as well it could end the need for books to offer horse racing.
The industry will not suffer but once States closer to Nevada pass the laws or opens books all the Sports Books in Nevada are going to have to consider options.
