All About Springfield Missouri this 4th of July 2022 by The Outlaw Micheal Tomsik


Springfield Missouri had been occupied by the Native American Tribes of the Osage, Delware, Kickapoo and other Tribes. In 1818 the settlers came to Missouri and by 1829 an attempt was made to settle the town of Springfield Missouri. In 1830 people started to settle in at Fullbright Springs area. 
( It today is at College Street).

In 1838 the city was incorporated. There is no history on why the town was called Springfield, however it is assumed it had to do with the natural springs in the area.

In 1820 the Native American Tribes had been forced out of Missouri and the TRAIL OF TEARS did travel through Springfield Missouri. Today you can find historical spots in Springfield Missouri about the Trail of Tears. 

In August 1861 the Civil War reached Missouri. In 1862 there was a battle at Pea Ridge near Springfield Missouri. In 1863 another battle happened in Springfield at Wilson's Creek. 

In 1865 Springfield became famous for the first quick draw between Wild Bill Hickok and David Tutt.

If you are up for an adventure you can go find the markers on the streets where the incident happened.

In 1870 the rail road came to Springfield and many people are not aware there had been two towns North Springfield and Springfield. The two towns merged in 1887. North Spring field was located on what would be Commercial Street today.

Springfield had some issues in 1906 as three black men got lynched that had been innocent of a accused rape of a woman. There is a marker in downtown Springfield Missouri if you want to find it.

Springfield Missouri became very popular as being the birth place of ROUTE 66. In 1926 the name was Chicago to Los Angeles Highway but in 1938 it was changed to ROUTE 66. Today you can find some history of Route 66 in Springfield. You can find places about Route 66 on  Kearny, Glenstone, College Street, Saint Louis Street, and Missouri 266.

In 1932 another history making shot out happened between the police and outlaws Harry Young, and his brother Jennings Young. In the shoot out seven police officers got killed.

In 1953 ten COBRA snakes got  released and found and all ten got killed in Springfield. The Cobra was added to the city seal. It was discovered an angry pet owner released them to harm the owner of a pet store.

In 1955 to 1960 the first Ozark Jubilee was broadcasted from Springfield Missouri on ABC. 

Today Springfield has grown into the third largest city in Missouri following Kansas City and Saint Louis.

You can find a Zoo, a Safari on the outside of town, Pro Bass Shop and the Aquarium. There are several caverns to explore, and Branson Missouri is only a short 30 minute drive away. Smaller towns like Republic, Nixa, Stratton, and Ozark offer much adventures as well. These are all inside of 30 miles of Springfield.

Springfield has added some major colleges, and industry to the city but still offers a simple way of life.

Annie and I moved here two years ago and we love living in Springfield Missouri.
